As part of HSP Group’s services, we offer on-site spirometry testing, or lung function testing. With the same convenience, ease of engagement, and minimal disruption that all of HSP’s other Medical Surveillance services provide, each lung-function test takes 10 – 15 minutes to complete.
It is simply a matter of using a convenient room near the workforce or bringing a branded caravan, and our Occupational Health Nurse or Technician will then perform the Spirometry tests according to the order or schedule that suits production for the ‘exposed’ staff.
After conducting each lung-function test, our Project Manager will present a summarised Management report for your records within 2 weeks of the visit and give a brief to our contact person. All health surveillance records will be kept confidential by us. Additionally, by having previous records, we can detect any early signs of abnormal lung deterioration on subsequent visits and address any issues before they get worse.
Spirometry testing is carried out in accordance with statutory requirements and according to best practice in high-risk employees and for substances identified as respiratory sensitizers.
In the event that an employee needs action taken on abnormalities noted, they can be referred to our Occupational Health Clinics where a follow-up chest x-ray and diagnosis will be performed by our Occupational Health Medial Practitioner (OHMP), who will determine if it is an idiopathic medical problem or an occupational disease that may require referral to the Compensation for Occupational Injuries (COID Act) and Diseases Fund, or the Compensation Commissioner.
Occupational lung diseases are caused by the following substances
Occupational lung disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and occupational asthma are commonly caused by respiratory sensitizers that should be monitored or tested for, such as:
Occupational Asthma
· Isocyanates
· Welding Fumes
· Dust and other Airborne Particulates (including Wood Dust of which some are carcinogenic)
· Paints / Adhesives/ Resins
· Glutaraldehyde
· Latex
· Soldering Flux
Lung Disease / COPD
· Asbestos
· Silica Dust / Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS)
· Ceramic Fibre
· Cement
Note: This is not a complete list but a Health Risk Analysis will highlight the need for Spirometry on a specific exposure basis.
HSP’s convenient on-site or Occupational Health Clinic based Spirometry (lung-function) testing service is easy to engage and causes minimum disruption to production. Call HSP today to see how we can help on 0861 873 477/info@hspgroup.co.za
